      Verruca

          What are they?

Warts and verrucas are small, rough bumps on the skin caused by a virus.

          What causes them?

The culprit is the human papillomavirus (HPV), different strains of which cause different wart types.

          Symptoms:

Verrucas (on feet): These often have tiny black dots under the hard skin and can be itchy or painful, like standing on a needle. They can spread to other areas if not treated.

Warts (on hands and other areas): While typically not painful, they can be unsightly.

          Treatment options:

Our treatment of preference is Verrutop, a topical medication. See below

Expert Verruca Treatment

Pain-free and effective treatment for verrucas available from 8 years, with Verrutop

      What are verruca?

Verrucae, also known as plantar warts, are small, rough bumps that appear on the soles of your feet. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus with over 100 different strains.  Verrucae can be uncomfortable and spread easily, sometimes to hands and other parts of the body (warts)

      What causes verrucae?

The HPV virus that causes verrucae enters the skin through tiny cuts, breaks, or areas of weakened skin on the soles of your feet. This can happen when walking barefoot in damp places like public pools or locker rooms.  Tight-fitting shoes that rub against the skin can also create openings for the virus to enter.  Once the virus enters a cell, it starts replicating and causing the abnormal growth that forms the verruca.

      What are the symptoms?

Verrucae typically appear as small, rough bumps on the soles of your feet. They may be flesh-toned, brown, or black, and often have a thick, calloused appearance.  A distinguishing feature of verrucae is a small black dot in the center, which is a clotted blood vessel feeding the wart.  Verrucae can be tender or painful, especially when putting weight on the affected area.  In some cases, multiple verrucae may cluster together, forming what's known as a mosaic wart.

      What are the treatment options?

Verrutop is a topical solution applied by a podiatrist directly to the verruca. It contains a unique combination of ingredients called a nitri-zinc complex.

This complex works by drying out and destroying the wart tissue. As Verrutop is applied, it triggers a process called mummification, where the wart tissue essentially hardens and dies.

This allows healthy skin cells to grow underneath, gradually pushing out the dead wart tissue.

Verrutop is considered a relatively painless treatment option compared to other methods like freezing or freezing with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy).  Because Verrutop targets only the affected area, it also minimizes the risk of damaging healthy surrounding skin.

In-grown Nail Correction

We use the Pedibrace system to help correct ingrown toenails in a pain-free and effective way

      What is an in-grown toenail

An ingrown toenail, medically known as onychocryptosis, is a painful condition where the nail grows into the soft flesh of the toe. This can cause redness, swelling, tenderness, and sometimes infection.

In severe cases, the ingrown portion of the nail may break through the skin, making it even more uncomfortable.

      What causes an in-grown toenail?

Several factors can contribute to ingrown toenails:

          • Improper nail trimming: Cutting your toenails too short, especially at the corners, is a major culprit. When the nail is cut too short, the skin can fold over and trap the nail edge as it grows.
          • Tight-fitting shoes: Shoes that crowd your toes can put pressure on the nail bed, forcing the nail to grow inwards.
          • Trauma: Stubbing your toe, dropping something on it, or repetitive injuries from activities like running can damage the nail and trigger ingrown growth.
          • Nail shape: People with naturally curved or ingrown toenails are more prone to this condition.
          • Heredity: Some people have a genetic predisposition to having curved or thick toenails, making them more susceptible to ingrown nails.
          • Other conditions: Fungal infections or certain medical conditions like diabetes can also contribute to ingrown toenails.
What is Pedibracing and is it right for me?

Pedibracing is non-surgical method for addressing ingrown toenails. Pedibracing utilizes a special UV-cured gel called Pedisafe which when applied and cured correctly, causes the gel to shrink slightly. This gentle shrinking action is intended to lift the ingrown nail edge away from the skin, allowing it to grow out naturally.

          Frequently asked questions:

Is pedibracing right for my ingrown toenail?

This generally depends on severity: Our FHP will advise if pedibracing's gentle approach is suitable for your specific ingrown toenail.

How painful is the pedibrace procedure? Pedibracing is a non-surgical technique, so it's generally considered painless.

How long will treatment take. Our FHP will advise on wear duration and replacement frequency for your situation.

What happens if Pedibrace doesn't work for me,

If pedibracing isn't effective, your podiatrist can discuss other options like trimming, medication, or even minor surgery.

FAQs

What is the difference between a FHP and a chiropodist

Podiatrists and foot health practitioners (FHPs) both play important roles in foot care, but their areas of expertise differ. Podiatrists have a broader scope of practice, qualified to diagnose and treat complex foot and ankle conditions. They can prescribe medications, perform surgeries, and create custom orthotics. FHPs, with their focus on routine care, provide essential services like toenail trimming, corn and callus removal, and diabetic foot checks. They can also refer patients to a podiatrist for further evaluation if needed.
