FREE Get-Active Therapy available exclusively from Letchworth Pharmacy

We promote healthy living by assisting you in becoming more physically active as you age. Our pharmacy provides a free get-active service for patients in cooperation with John Molyneux, a sports therapist and functional ageing specialist.

Exercise: a “no prescription” medicine.

Inactivity is seen as a "silent killer." Because of technology, we tend to move less these days. Cars, machinery, and screens have made our lives more sedentary, resulting in an increase in physical and mental illnesses.

This is especially true for the elderly, who tend to become less active as they age. According to some research, 42% of persons aged 55 and up are inactive. Shortness of breath, joint pain, sloth, fear of harm, lack of support, and boredom are all common reasons for this. ๏ปฟ

Adults who ignore the value of physical activity miss out on several opportunities to improve their health, performance, and overall well-being.

If you are 50 years old and above, we can support you in building a more active lifestyle.

Why physical activity is so important

It’s never too late to start a healthy habit.

Consistent and simple physical activity can help older patients:

Reduce the risk of developing chronic health conditions

Reduce the risk of falling

Reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety

Improve the quality of mental and physical health

Make daily tasks easier

Reduce back and joint pains

You are more likely to increase your physical activity and stick to it if advised by a healthcare professional.

I have used the services of this pharmacy recently and found it to be a most user friendly operation. The knowledgeable staff offer a friendly and efficient customer service. This pharmacy offers many services which others do not and is certainly a major asset both to the NHS and Letchworth Garden City.

Tamsyn Flitney

Amazing service. After receiving an unfulfilled presciption from my local pharmacy, this was the next closet that could help me. Even held back what I needed (without asking them too), couldn't ask for

I've been using just about every Pharmacy in Letchworth over the years, everyone has had issues, mainly with my prescriptions not being made in time and having to wait for hours to collect them.

FAQs

How much physical activity do adults need?

It is recommended that adults engage in physical activity for 150 minutes per week. You can choose the duration and timings of your exercises according to your convenience. Once per week, 3 times per week, or 5 times per week, the goal is to move more and sit less.

What is the best exercise for older adults?

It is impossible to find one exercise that fits all older people. The best exercise is the one suitable for your health condition , that you can do regularly and consistently, and most importantly, that you enjoy doing. The aim is to stay active and avoid physical inactivity. You have the option to mix it up and opt for activities that promote flexibility, balance, stamina, and strength.

Does physical activity help me reduce the risk of developing diseases and serious health conditions?

Being physically inactive increases your risk for many physical and psychological conditions like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, and more. Engaging in consistent physical activity can have a positive influence on your health by protecting you from developing these health conditions. Also, regular physical activity helps slow the loss of muscle and bone mass that usually takes place with advancing age and helps retain strength and stamina.

Do I need to consult my GP before starting to exercise?

It is always recommended to consult your doctor especially if you have a health condition that might require extra attentiveness when making decisions. Your GP can help you decide on the intensity of the physical activity you are allowed to practice depending on your case. You can also get back to an exercise specialist or other health professional.

I’m sixty years old. Am I considered too old to exercise?

No! It’s never too late to start or return to a healthy habit that will benefit your overall wellness. If you have a certain goal in mind, it is recommended to work with a professional trainer, preferably a functional ageing specialist, that will help you design a customized activity program.
